Who else is dusting off their lighter layers for Spring?
It’s no secret that I’m a fan of warmer weather with clear blue skies and long balmy evenings. Now that the weather is warming up I’m looking forward to greeting all of my dresses, shorts and sleeveless tops (at least in the southern hemisphere – if you’re in the northern hemisphere you might like to check out my favourite Autumn and Winter pieces). As I mentioned before, I’m a big fan of a small collection of long-lasting pieces that see me through season after season and which I just update from time to time. With the exception of the few odd pieces here and there, I don’t need to update much this year and I’ve left below nine spring staples that will be in my capsule wardrobe this year.
A Summer Dress
Dresses are the backbone of my wardrobe all year around, but more so than ever in the warmer months. There’s a simplicity to them – no mixing or matching (or worrying if the top you want to wear is in the washing basket) and all they need is a few simple accessories. The beautiful dress above is one that I bought back in January (similar here) and is going to get a lot of love this summer. Of course, comfort is always key and it’s made from organic linen which is so lovely to wear – particularly on a hot, humid day when you want breathable fabric. You can’t go past classic stripes and I love a dress which has a bit of twirl to it – it makes me feel so feminine.
A Linen Jumpsuit
Earlier this year I bought a beautiful linen jumpsuit that we were supposed to take to Europe with us, but seeing as that didn’t eventuate, I’m excited to wear it this Spring. Like dresses, jumpsuits and playsuits tick all the boxes – comfortable, easy to wear, simple but elegant at the same time.
High Waisted Tailored Shorts
Bodysuits
Bodysuits are my favourite basic layers because they create a lovely silhouette for jeans, skirts or shorts and you don’t have to worry about the top becoming untucked or adding extra bulk to the outfit. I like to have a few in black and white.
Hats and Sunglasses
I’m obsessed about sun protection, so hat and sunglasses accessories are a must, particularly for Spring and Summer when the sun is strongest. I’m always a fan of accessories that are also practical. I lost my hat recently so I need to buy a new one and have been eyeing of this one from Will and Bear. As I mentioned here, I love using accessories, like these red sunglasses, to add just a hint of colour to an otherwise minimalist wardrobe.
A White T-Shirt
I’ll admit I don’t currently own one, but but a white tee is high on my list of items to acquire for my Spring and Summer wardrobe – or really just all year around (this one looks like a nice fit). I’ve been loving a simple white t-shirt and denim look at the moment and it’s an easy way to cover up from the sun, while staying cool.
Light Weight Pants
Even in summer a pair of light weight pants can come in handy, particularly of an evening with a cool breeze. Here’s my favourite pair of the moment.
A light weight blazer or denim jacket
I’m a bit of a wuss when it comes to the cold, so even in Summer I like having light jacket on me – particularly if I’m in air conditioning (I’m sure I’m not the only one who keeps a scarf at my desk to drape around my shoulders). This is a beautiful one by Shona Joy and would look lovely paired with a slip dress or shorts.
The woven Flats
Ballet flats are a staple in my wardrobe all year around, but I’m particularly loving these ones from Bared Footwear, which I’ve been wearing to and from work each day. I’ve spoken about them before here, but they are so comfortable and supportive and are perfect paired with a pair of shorts or a casual dress. I also love a good pair of strappy sandals and heels as well.
I’d love to know, what are your favourite Spring or Summer pieces?
