Tops, even good basics like a T-Shirt or bodysuit, can be one of those deceptively tricky items of clothing to buy. However, if chosen well, they can be a hardworking staple. I have a handful of tops like this and they are worth their weight in gold because they go with everything. As soon as I saw this one shoulder top from Country Road I knew it would be a purchase that didn’t bear much thinking upon. I was drawn to it’s simple silhouette and I loved the elegant but also slightly daring asymmetrical design. It’s an easy top to dress up and down and I’ve found myself reaching for it a lot in the lead up to the festive season. Here, I’ve styled it with my favourite jeans, nude slingback pumps and gold hoops for a simple look that could take you from day to night – an outfit I’ve worn to several Christmas gatherings. When styling a one shoulder top, here are a few rules of thumb I try to follow:
1. Keep it simple: Given this top is a statement piece, I like to keep the rest of the outfit simple. I choose pants, skirts and accessories which will accentuate the design such as mom jeans, tailored pants, a wrap skirt or an a-line slip skirt. Nude pumps look lovely for a dressed up look, but black strappy sandals would also look great for a throw back to the nineties.
2. Pare it with high waisted pants or skirts: The top is quite fitted so I like paring it with high waisted pants or skirts because it creates a streamlined silhouette.
3. Opt for earrings over a necklace: Because a necklace would break up the lovely asymmetrical neckline consider reaching for a pair of statement earrings or gold hoops instead.
4. If in doubt, add a red lip: I think you can’t really go wrong with a red lip in general, but I do like how it adds hint of sophistication to this outfit.
