Slow Fashion

I’m passionate about slow fashion and sustainable style. Clothing made with intention that looks after our people and earth. I’m all about buying less but better, investing in quality wardrobe staples that you will have for years to come.

My approach to slow fashion is a gentle one. For me, sustainable fashion is a practice; you don’t have to have to create the “perfect” sustainable wardrobe to be making a meaningful difference.

In these blog posts I share how to take a slower approach to style that’s sustainable for both your wardrobe and life. You can build a wardrobe which doesn’t compromise on your values or sense of style.

Here I share simple wardrobe and mindset shifts to help you think of your clothes in a different way and to help you start building a more sustainable wardrobe today.

“Dress for success” the saying goes, and cliche though it might be, there’s a lot of truth to it. We spend a large portion of our lives at work so, naturally, this is reflected in the proportion of our wardrobes which comprise work wear. It also gives us the opportunity to take a slower approach to…

A girl wearing a black halter neck black jumpsuit from Zara and neutral heels standing in front of Tempe House Sydney. Formal dresses, event wear, black jumpsuits, quality over quantity, conscious consumer, fewer better, buy well, minimalist wardrobe principles

“Quality over quantity”. It’s a term thrown around so often these days.  I’m sure we can all agree that the sentiment behind this popular saying is to value fewer pieces but make sure that the ones we buy add value to our lives. However, beneficial as these sayings are, they can be phrased as lofty ideals,…

Less is more, as they saying goes. But is it? When it comes to fashion I love taking a simpler approach by: investing in quality pieces; having a smaller, but more versatile wardrobe; using capsule wardrobe principles to get more mileage out of my wardrobe; adding subtle hints of colour and print to a mostly…

Dresses. They’re my archilles heel. Especially t Dresses. They’re my archilles heel. Especially the beautiful, impractical evening dresses. 🖤

However, there are just fewer opportunities to wear evening attire which means that after only one or two wears they can end up gathering dust.

Below are a few tips for making your beautiful, evening dresses more sustainable.

1. Embrace outfit repeating: Shop your own closet and give your dresses the spotlight they deserve. Remember, re-wearing an outfit should be a badge of honour, not something to be embarrassed by.

2. Phone a friend: Borrow a dress from a friend for a fresh look without buying something new.

3. Rent or hire a dress: Check out clothing rental sites to hire designer dresses at a fraction of the price. Look stunning while reducing waste and saving wardrobe space.

4. Go preloved: Explore online platforms like Gumtree, eBay, or The Real Real for barely worn, second-hand gems. You never know what treasures you’ll find!

5. Sell what you won’t wear: If an event piece won’t see the light of day again, sell it sooner rather than later. Create space, recoup value, and let someone else enjoy it!

6. Choose sustainable brands: When buying new, support ethical and sustainable clothing brands. Or opt for timeless designs that can stand the test of time. ♻️✨

I’d love to know, have you tried any of these sustainable approaches for evening attire? I’d love to hear your experiences below.

“Thank you for love, no matter what its outcome, “Thank you for love, no matter what its outcome,
that leads us to the window in the dark,
that adds another otherness to others,
that holds out stars as if they were first diamonds
found in a mine that had been long closed down…” — Bruce Dawe

A poem is truly beautiful if you can analyse it for a grade 10 English essay and still love it years later. “Definition of Loving” by Bruce Dawe is one of those poems for me.

What’s a poem that really speaks to your soul?

This floral dress always reminds me of summer. O This floral dress always reminds me of summer.

Of listening to the cicadas hum away into the evening as the world turns golden just for a few brief moments before evening sets in.

Summer seems a distant memory at present, but I’m looking forward to sunbaked days ahead.

I think it speaks to why investing in pieces that you really love, pays off in the long run.

Instagram, as it has many items in my wardrobe, introduced me to this dress.

I had to save for it - waiting until it came on sale. But it’s been one of my most worn dresses from that point onwards and so its cost per wear has ended up being quite low.

It’s also well made and durable. It’s structure hasn’t changed, the colours haven’t faded with multiple washes, the fabric, linen, has been hard wearing and durable.

It’s just one example of why quality over quantity is such an important guiding principle for me, when choosing pieces for my wardrobe.

What’s a principle which guides the way you collect clothes?

No, I did not pack lightly on our recent trip to t No, I did not pack lightly on our recent trip to the Loire Valley in France.

Yes, I can confirm that 90% of my luggage comprised romantic and entirely impractical dreamy dresses.

And yes, it weighed a ton.

If you require evidence, it is in the reel above. 🙈

For travel, do you pack lightly? Or are you more of an “all but the kitchen sink” type of packer?
