Skirts have always posed a problem for my  wardrobe. I love the way they look, but in the past I’ve struggled to find a flattering cut or design which was comfortable, wouldn’t rise up my waistline or constrict my movement. The ever effortless dress was simply easier. I had almost written skirts off as something that wasn’t for me when the humble midi skirt prompted me to re-consider their place in my wardrobe. This black linen number particularly won the tick of approval with its feminine, but not over the top, tiered ruffle detailing.

What I do I love about midi skirts? Well, they’re versatile, can be dressed up or down and I can wear them all day without feeling like I need to get changed the minute I get home (pencil skirt, I’m looking at you). In case you’ve also had a similar problem with skirts and was wondering if midi skirts could work in your wardrobe. Here’s my favourite tips for how to wear a midi skirt all year around.

How to wear a midi skirt in Autumn and Winter

A midi skirt is one of those versatile pieces that you can wear all year around. I love how it doesn’t have too much fabric, like a maxi skirt sometimes does, but equally gives you more coverage which is perfect during the cooler months. Styled it with a light knit or a turtle neck sweater, stockings and a pair of boots (or, here in Australia where the weather is quite mild all year around – pair of chic low heels or ballet flats) it makes the perfect piece that can transcend both your spring/summer and autumn/winter wardrobe.

Midi skirts are also perfect for spring and summer particularly if you choose a breathable fabric like silk or linen. A floral blouse and chunky cardigan would transition this look into spring and a light weight cami or peasant style blouse would create the perfect breezy summer look. For a more casual, day time look style them with woven accessories and a pair of strappy flats, slides or ballet flats (for example, this pair from Tkees would be perfect). Statement earrings and strappy heels or pumps would transition the look from day to night.

The inspiration for this outfit came when I saw Beck Wadsworth, founder of An Organised Life, combine an olive coloured turtleneck knit and a tiered midi skirt. The simple monochrome look created such a lovely silhouette which epitomised Beck’s understated but elegant approach to style and it was one of the first combinations that came to mind when I was brainstorming ways to re-style this piece beyond the warmer months.

A midi skirt is the perfect a classy and elegant option for a date night out when styled with a statement top, some heels and jewellery of choice. You can see how I’ve styled this midi skirt with a statement one shoulder top here to take this skirt from day to night.

I love how the slightly longer hemline makes midi skirts perfect to style for the office. I often wear this skirt to work with a simple black top or office appropriate blouse and a pair of black or neutral pumps.
